Perhaps the hard drive itself, (&/or) connecting cable, has damages.
That accounts for 'mac starts up to circle with line through it'.
And if so, these parts could be replaced; to restore functions.
"A prohibitory symbol, which looks like a circle with a line or slash through
it, means that your startup disk contains a Mac operating system, but it's
not a version or build of macOS that your Mac can use."
1.Press and hold the power button on your Mac for up to 10 seconds, until your Mac turns off.
2.Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold both Command (⌘) and R to start up from macOS Recovery.
3.While in macOS Recovery, use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk.
4.If Disk Utility found no errors, or repaired all errors, reinstall macOS.
5.If you still need help, please contact Apple Support.

My aunt gave us her Mac laptop and she wiped it clean and all that and we reset the password and now I’m trying to turn it on for the first time and I’m just getting the screen with the circle and line thru it. I tried holding command +R when turning it on and that’s what gave me the box I posted the pic of. Just have no idea what to do next
No pic showed up here, use this to get it to show here...
What are you trying to do, Format a drive or repair a drive?
It’s a MacBook Pro
