mail crashes on imac

When I open mail on my iMac , mail immediately crashes. This does not happen with the same mail on my iPad and iPhone

iMac 21.5″, OS X 10.11

Please try restarting in Safe Mode and then restart normally.

mail on imac not loading Mail on my up to date iMac (Monteray) and up to date iPad Pro is incredibly slow. Often the email message itself will not download, showing no contents. I read a couple similar older questions here where the answer was never provided or highly impractical. I mean, rebooting the system, starting in safe mode, is a last resort solution. Has anyone found a useful answer to this? Thanks. Peter
