I see how to add someone to an existing GROUP text, but not how to add someone if the initial text was not set up as a group text. Seems like it should be obvious, but apparently not. Thanks for your help.

You cannot add someone to an existing single addressee text. You would need to start a Group text to have the ability to add someone else. And, it would have to be a group iMessage, all iOS users.
