To unlock the passcode of deceased person

I am writing this to request you to let me know the legal procedure to unlock the iPhone passcode of my brother-in-law who died on 23rd July 2021.

20 days ago, on 8th July, he was hit in his Spinal Cord while making a video through his iPhone in a water park and his body was paralyzed and put on a ventilator and unfortunately, he lost the battle of life on 23rd July. The iPhone contains the video that he made during the unfortunate incident and it is very important for our family to look for the actual cause of the injury.

I, therefore, request you to let me know the legal procedure to unlock his iPhone.

looking forward to your kind response.

I'm sorry to hear of your brother-in-law's death.

The passcode (a four or six digit number used to lock an individual device) is storde only on the phone, so it cannot be retrieved or unlocked by any way other than entering it. You wil have to erase the phone - please see If you forgot the passcode on your iPhone, or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support

However you can access the Apple ID (though this will not unlock a phone locked by a passcode) but you will need to get a Court Order to do it and to know what the ID is. Please see How to request access to a deceased family member's Apple accounts - Apple Support
