Apple Watch Remote app fails to pair with Apple 4K TV (not fitness)

The basic instructions fail here. I see the code ready to type in on my watch face. I have the apple tv on the page that says "...hold it close to this Apple TV".

It doesn't matter how close or how long the watch is held there displaying the code that the Apple TV should start displaying or whatever - the Apple TV does nothing. I can leave the watch in that state right on top of the device - nothing happens. Holding it any any side or angle for 60 seconds at a whack does nothing.

I have restarted both watch and tv; they live on the same network and have all network things enabled and correctly configured for every other operation on both devices.

My iPhone paired properly as did another older iPhone.

The watch is a new Series 6. The Apple TV is the slightly older 4k

FYI: I also do not see the Watch (to pair) on my TV but I can still use Watch Remote app to control TV.

Again. I also do not see the pairing code on my Watch.

Somehow the instructions are misleading.

On the Apple TV, go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote App and Device

  • Make sure your paired iPhone is added (same settings but for only your iPhone

Use your Apple Watch to control Apple TV

Make sure the Apple TV is awake, then follow these steps:

  1. Open the Remote app  on your Apple Watch.
  2. Choose your Apple TV, then swipe up, down, left, or right to move through the Apple TV menu options.
  3. Tap to choose the selected item.
  4. Tap the Play/Pause button to pause or resume playback.
  5. Tap the Menu button to go back, or touch and hold it to return to the main menu.
