Messages - Turn Off Notifications While App Is Quit

Sometimes, I don't want to hear the audio notification on my MacBook Air's Messages. I don't want to use Do Not Disturb, so I figure I could quit the app. But I still hear the notifications. Other than going into the settings to turn the sound notifications off and on, isthere away to change the notifications so you don't hear it when the app is not open?
