Startup chime returned with 11.5.2 update also👍

I fixed mine by reinstalling the OS

Just reinstall 11.5.1 or whatever comes up after starting in Recovery Mode and hitting reinstall. Sometimes it does the previous version (11.5) and then you may have to update again to 11.5.1.

Specifically yes, except for the fact the 11.5.1 seemed to have broken that—even when checked....is the issue as I see it.

—Resetting NVRAM did not resolve: key combo or Terminal commands—

nvram StartupMute=%00
or
sudo nvram BootAudio=%0

—Resetting SMC did not resolve

—Unchecking and rechecking the preferences box did not resolve.

—I have not tested the re-install as stated earlier.

—mute not on, verified

—System Preferences toggled off and back on again did not resolve

Do you mean reinstalling the latest version of the OS 11.5.1 or do you mean reinstalling the previous version of the OS?

The problem of no startup chime remains with 11.5.2.

Yes, and the button is not doing anything - as per the two posts at the head of this thread.

The button was toggled on, the startup chime was there - then the Big Sur 11.5.1 update, and the check box is still checked - but the startup chime is missing.

I am currently trying to reinstall the OS to see if that fixes the issue.

Well, unfortunately reinstalling Big Sur 11.5.1 not only did not fix the lack of startup chime, it introduced a new issue: on booting it displays the Apple Big Sur splash of bright color background, despite the machine being set up as a single user with no guest users permitted.

Going downhill fast . . . .

Same here and don't know if it is connected but importing mp4 video clips into imovie works but no sound. Fine on my M1 macmini but not my intel 2018 mac mini running 11.5.1 also. Video clips are from my iphone and worked in the past. I found a thread to fix this but all fixes make no difference ( converting to mov files etc) Seemed to happen same time as chime stopped working.
