Pull it straight out. Do not twist or bend the drive when pulling on it.
Either eject it or shut down the computer then remove it.
As above, but wait for the little light on the drive to stop flashing: for some reason the drive disappears from the Desktop before it's fully unmounted and sometime pulling it out straight after it's disappeared results in the 'drive was not properly ejected' message: it's possible for some data to be corrupted in this case, though mostly this doesn't seem to happen.
If the thumb drive is visible on the desktop, click its icon and press Command-E (⌘E) to eject it. Then simply unplug it.

Eject it from the Finder's sidebar, or the Computer window(accessible from the Go menu), the Disk Utility, or similar locations, and then unplug it.
