can I have different devices use different apple IDs?

my husband and I have two different phones, but since I set them up with my apple ID, we are having some confusion. His photo's show up on my phone (actually both phones). Mine do not show up on his phone I think because I do not use iCloud. I would like to change his phone to use a new apple ID just for him. What will this do to my phone? his photos?
