Apple News loses its place

A very aggravating aspect of Apple News it how it doesn't remember my place when I momentarily switch to another app.

Say I've scrolled through several pages of articles and want to check email or look up something in Safari, when I return to News, it's back at the top. This means scrolling back down to locate the last article that I was reading.

It's a frustrating nuisance, especially if I've scrolled through many pages.. Is there any way to prevent this?

Thank you!

Why does Apple News constantly jump back to the top?

This is very frustrating. I have skimmed 20 screens of Apple News, leave for a while, and then return, only to have Apple News reset my location at the top of Apple News. So I now have to rescan those same 20 screens, trying to remember where I left off.

Why not let the USER decide if they want to return to the top?

Current "bounce again back to the top" a really bad UX choice.

@sallenmd:

Thank you for responding.

I know about bookmarking but your explanation might help someone else. Bookmarking is indeed a partial solution but it only saves the article, not the location of the article in the stream of news articles.

Your bookmarking tip led me to try an experiment: I scrolled down through a dozen pages of articles, the randomly opened one. I then read a few emails, opened a few Safari bookmarks, checked updates at the App Store - altogether about ten minutes spent away from News. When I accessed News again, the random article was still front and center. When I closed it, News was still at the spot where the random article was located. So, there is a workaround.

It's a shame that Apple's vaunted attention to detail doesn't extend to such things a keeping track of where users were.

Thanks again.

I think that's just the way it works. A workaround is to bookmark the article you are reading. Tapping the little box with the up arrow in the upper right corner will bring up a menu at the bottom that includes "Save Story" with a bookmark icon to tap. You can then find the article again from the "Following" icon at the bottom of the main screen and tapping "Saved Stories".
