Screen Replacement Program for Aluminum Models of Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3

Hi,

I hv owned a A1758 Series 2 Apple Watch for 4 years now and early last year in March, it started showing a small crack on the display which developed over the last 1.5yrs and now the display has popped out completely. While looking for support on internet, I stumbled upon an Apple notification about the model’s issue

https://support.apple.com/en-in/screen-replacement-program-apple-watch-series-2-3

Apple never communicated this issue to me on time while knowing all the time that customers like me own the model and might be facing an issue. Now I am told that the program is over.

I expected Apple to resolve the issue as it was their failure to communicate to me on time else I would hv got it replaced on time during the program. I spoke in detail with the support team under Case and was told to raise this issue in communities. Pls help and resolve it for me. At the minimum I expect Apple to own up and resolve this sue under the program which is now apparently over. And in future, Apple should communicate proactively with all owners of the models which are facing larger issues like this. Not everyone would come to know of such larger issues on their own in time. This is expected to a customer-centric companies like Apple.

Hi Debbie,

The watch that I hv A1758 was covered as one of the models impacted. I am not sure what stopped Apple from reaching out t o all the owners of those models. It was a simple thing to do. I did not contact AppleCare when I first saw the crack. I did not know at that point of time that this model was giving such issues which Apple is aware of and infarction running a program to replace screens of the model. If I had known then, I would hv definitely called AppleCare.

It isn't "Debbie".

Only a small percentage of the A1758 models were impacted by this so no they did not send an email to every owner of this model watch. No one does that anyway. Also, if you read the service program and looked at the pictures the ones that were impacted with this particular issue (it was a fault in the Ion-X glass) didn't have "a small crack in the corner of the screen" they all broke just like the pictures in that article. If yours did not do that, and you said it didn't, then you would not have been covered by this program even 1.5 years ago when you first cracked your screen. Most likely after you cracked your screen dust and moisture got into the watch and eventually caused battery failure which led to swelling of the battery and pushed your display unit away from the body of the watch. This is not covered by that program.

Even automobile companies don't notify all owners of service programs unless it is a major safety issue. They wait to fix it either when it breaks or when you bring your car in for service. You should have taken care of the issue when you cracked the screen. It is called personal responsibility which seems to be going out of favor.

Well according to your first post you said it started with a small crack and developed over the past few years. That is NOT what happens to the screens covered under this program and yes I have seen one that was replaced. When it cracks it is all around the screen at one time just like the pictures show. So did yours suddenly appear all around the screen like the picture and you were not telling truth in your first post? Otherwise no, your watch does not have the same issue. And Apple did act responsibly, for people who suddenly heard/saw the screen crack, like shown in the pictures, Apple replaced them. They put a time limit on the program because they new there were a limited number of watches that were impacted and that the damage would occur within that time frame. And no, since it is NOT a safety matter they did not issue a recall and notify all owners of the issue.

Way back when I was involved in two safety issues, one involving the power adapter of early iPhones and another involving removable batteries for a MacBook Pro series. In both cases Apple did notify me. I also was covered by an early iPod Touch screen issue but Apple did not contact me but they did cover it when I took the device to them. There are several other Apple service programs and in none of them does Apple contact anyone. Neither does Samsung, Dell, HP, Google, etc. And the same with appliances, toasters, etc., etc. If you are looking for a company that would have notified you then you will be disappointed. But since you didn't have the issue described in the service program you wouldn't have been covered anyway.
