BMI in Health App

Why does calculation of BMI only happen sporadically?

I've seen BMI calculated by the app, but not consistently, is there a way to reguarize this calculation?

Thanks i_rina.

You are close to being right, I think, but I will correct you on the statement that BMI is "not automatically calculated by the Health application".

I think that BMI is calculated automatically by the app, but not displayed, i.e."tracked" automatically.

It displays the calculated value when you tap "Add Data". For instance, I manually input 24.75 this morning. When I tap 'Add data' this afternoon, it displays 24.74, so I think the 24.74 is a calculated value. Where else did it come from??

If I then tap "Add", then the calculated value displays on the graph.

So, in other words, to access the calculated value the user must tap "add Data", then tap "Add" to accept the calculated value which is automatically filled in on the input screen already. The calculated value is then displayed or tracked.

What it doesn't do, as you later say, automatically "track" the calculated values: it requires the user to go through the "Add Data" then "Add" routine to display or "track" the calculated values over time.

I hope this is helpful to other users, who may have been told that the the app doesn't automatically calculate BMI values.

Greetings!

The Health app provides a lot of great information and options including tracking BMI, and you’ve come to a great place for help. BMI is not automatically calculated by the Health application. If you would like for BMI to automatically be tracked you would need to utilize a BMI specific application. You can find app recommendations for BMI tracking by going in to the Health app > Browse > Body Measurements > Body Mass Index. You can also add data manually by tapping Add Data towards the top-right of the screen.

You can find additional information for using the Health app in the following article as well.

Use the Health app on your iPhone or iPod touch

Have a wonderful week!

We appreciate those additional details,

By default when adding BMI a number does appear based on the height and weight information you’ve included in the health application. If you’re changing that number and it’s not saving as expected do you know if you have a BMI application installed? If not, and the number is changing to something else unexpectedly it would be recommended to reach out to Apple. You can find their contact information via the Get Support website.

Take care!

"By default when adding BMI a number does appear based on the height and weight information you’ve included in the health application."

Exactly as I said, an automatically calculated BMI value, automatically placed on the "Add Data" input screen.

"If you’re changing that number and it’s not saving as expected do you know if you have a BMI application installed?"

This is not relevant to my post, but no, I do not have any unexpected issues or BMI applications.

In a nutshell, Health automatically calculates BMI, but rather than automatically displaying ("tracking") the calculated value, it requires the user to manually "Add Data", then "Add" the calculated value (which is automatically entered on the input screen).

The automatically calculated value is then displayed or "tracked" in the application.

Take care!

From the description you recently provided it does sound as though the Health app is working as expected.

We apologize for any confusion regarding the information. You are right that BMI is automatically calculated but does need to manually be added to the Health app. Apple does appreciate our feedback about their products, services, and features. If you would like to provide this feedback for review you can do so via the Product Feedback website.

Have a wonderful rest of your evening.
