How to update everything

My MacBook Pro 13-inch is older (2014?) and runs the OS X Yosemite. Can I update the software and operating system? Safari and other programs no longer work well. If I do Software update all that shows is Kindle?

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.10

You need to confirm the exact model of your laptop in order to determine which OS you can run on this laptop. You can get this information by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac". a MBPro (late 2013) model can run the latest version of macOS which at this time is 11.5 Big Sur. If you have a 2012 or Early-2013 model, then you can only run up to macOS 10.15 Catalina. See this article for which Macs are compatible with which versions of macOS:

You can find links to the various macOS installers within this Apple article which also includes instructions for creating an optional bootable macOS USB installer:

Personally I would create the bootable macOS USB installer just in case something goes wrong as it may give you more options to deal with any problems.

Make sure to have a good backup before attempting to upgrade macOS just in case something goes wrong.

You should always have frequent and regular backups.
