I wish to eject a sandisc from my macbook pro, but am not given the option to "eject"

How can I safely eject a sandisc from my macbook pro(2011) but the right click doesn't give me that option. Alas I did hurriedly remove it and receive a reminder that it was not ejected appropriately

Did you try dragging the desktop icon for that disk into "trash"? That ejects a drive without damaging contents.

Also, there should be an "eject" image (a thick up-arrow) in a "Finder" window for and mounted drive.

Fortunately, "forcible removal" usually does not damage the structure unless it is under very-fast/very-active modification. And especially in the case of USBs which are essentially "idle".
