Black screen but MacBook Pro laptop is on

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro with a relatively new motherboard. My screen went black today. I have hooked my laptop into an external display and can use my laptop on that with a bluetooth keyboard.

How do I tell if my screen is shot? (I'm hoping that some display setting accidentally got turned on.) Ideas? Thanks. H.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

After some looking, I found some things to narrow things down, or help.

first, try shining your phone’s flashlight, or a different light through the Apple logo on the backfield the laptop. Then while shining the light through the Apple logo, look at the screen really closely to see if you see anything about where the logo is on the the back.

it is suggested that this isn’t a problem many people (if any) deal with.

you can try resetting the PRAM. PRAM

The process for resetting the PRAM is the same across all devices. To start:

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Press the power button.
  • Immediately after, press Command, Option, P, and R all at the same time on the keyboard.
  • Hold these keys down until you hear the Mac's startup sound for a second time (the first was after the initial press of the power button).
  • Release all of the keys.

beyond this, I am not sure. Hope this works.

Google "flexgate" MacBook Pro -- I have a 2017 MacBook Pro with similar failures due to a known design flaw in the length of the cable that connects the display to the laptop (it wears out prematurely under normal use because it is too short/taut). Apple is fixing this for "a small number" of 2016 MacBook Pros but the flaw persists with later models and costs $600 to repair. The faulty cable was redesigned/longer in 2018 models.

C'mon Apple! You're in the proper position to correct this and absorb the costs.

Yes, I am hearing the startup chime when I restart the laptop. In frustration, I went and got a bite to eat. Now that I’m back, I’m having a new problem … my computer’s desktop will pop up fine on the external display screen, then that screen will go dark. (I’m typing this on an IPad.) I tested it on a different external display with the same result. Hope you can help. I spent $800 last year when my laptop wouldn’t start at all, so feeling a bit worried. Thanks.
