Do Not Disturb exceptions

Recently moved back to iOS from Android. Why doesn’t apple extend Do Not Disturb exception functionality to Messages? With messaging increasingly overtaking voice calls this is a no brainer.

I can do not disturb while using the phone app, HOWEVER, it will not do not disturb during the call. I’m tired of not being able to hear clients when a text message comes through. How can I not hear a text message alert while on a phone call?
