M1 iMac Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse Lagging

I have a new M1 iMac that's just two weeks old and I've noticed that when it's downloading a large file from the Internet, the Apple keyboard and Magic Mouse lag to the point of being almost unusable. I first noticed this a couple of days ago when I was downloading a large iOS file to restore my phone and for the 10 minutes it took on my Internet connection to download the file, I could barely use the machine. I'm able to duplicate this by running SpeedTest or opening a couple of tabs and playing YouTube videos simultaneously. I've turned the machine on and off, turned the keyboard and mouse on and off, reset the bluetooth module, even restored the bluetooth devices to factory settings, and nothing's worked. I have tried hooking up a wired keyboard and an old wired Mighty Mouse, and the problem doesn't occur with them. Is this normal for the M1 iMac? My previous iMac is a Late 2013 which I use with a wired Apple keyboard and the bluetooth Magic Mouse, and this never happens to the mouse with that iMac no matter how hard I pushed the machine.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

I believe we need to proceed with an EtreCheck report. EtreCheck is a useful App to diagnose and identify issues, both hardware and software. It is trusted by many users. Please follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Navigate to: https://etrecheck.com and get the free version of EtreCheckPro.
  2. Download it. It is a free and trusted app. It is often recommended here on Apple Support Communities.
  3. Open EtreCheck, and before running the report, be sure to check “Allow full Drive Access” at the bottom of the EtreCheckPro window.
  4. Run the report, and put it in a post, as seen here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250000211. We will then examine the report for issues in your Mac.

  • Clean up • Follow the EtreCheck prompts to remove orphan files.
  • It is recommended that you re-enable automatic Time Machine backups.
  • Delete CleanMyMac [Instructions]

After deleting CleanMyMac, see if the issue is resolved. Even if it isn't, it is strongly recommended that you don't reinstall CleanMyMac.

Just to resolve things. Turns out it was my single-band 10 year old router. An Apple Support specialist suggested it may be the router when I reported that I didn't have the problem on my 2006 and 2013 iMacs. Apparently, older Macs were configured for the routers of their generation while newer Macs, not so much. Switched to a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router, and the issue is fixed.
