Using a USB between Mac and PC

Hello, I was hoping someone can help.

I use a Mac Pro (Big Sur 11) at home and various PCs at work. I really need to password protect my work USB for use between both platforms. Is there a way to do this, or is it only possible using a third party app?

Thanks in advance for any help!

The best multi-platform option would be to use the third party app VeraCrypt to encrypt the drive. Just make sure to first erase the drive as GUID partition and exFAT using Disk Utility since Windows may use an incompatible file allocation size that macOS may not recognize.
