Iphone 12 won't initiate charging until screen is tapped ON

I am using Apple's fast charger for my new iPhone 12 Pro Max, and when I plug in the charger to the power source, it won't start charging it until I first tap on the screen. Don't know if the issue is with the plug itself or something else. All other solutions already tried (as mentioned in this and many other forums), but to no avail. Any ideas where the issue could be?

Hello Yusha9,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We understand that when fast charging your iPhone 12, your iPhone does not charge as expected. We’d like to help.

When you Fast charge your iPhone, what kind of power adaptor are you using? “You need a 20W or higher power adapter to fast charge your iPhone 12.”

Are you able to try charging a different compatible Apple device? If so, test to see if the issue continue.

Does your iPhone charge as expected with other power adaptors?

We would suggest restarting your device and then testing to see if it charges with the adapter. We would also suggest ensuring your iPhone is updated to the latest iOS version. If it isn’t, make sure to back up your iPhone and then Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Have a nice day!

Hi Teddy!

As mentioned in my post, I am using Apple's original fast charger, and yes, it's a 20W charger. The thing is that when I plug it for the first time after using my iPhone for a while, it will not recognize the charger at all. But if I then follow it multiple times, it will recognize it each time I plug it in. It seems the charger itself maybe faulty. I don't have any other charger handy to test if the same thing happens. What could be the solution? The charger seems to charge the battery fine though, I don't have any problem with the charging itself.

Yusha9,

Take a look at the section titled "If your device charges slowly or won’t charge" in If your iPhone or iPod touch won't charge for some next steps and troubleshooting. If your iPhone does not initially recognize the charger but does eventually and does charge as expected, the issue could be the cable, the port, or the adapter, possibly even the wall outlet. The best way to test this would be with another device or with another USB-C cable, however, we would also suggest looking into service options. You can take the charging accessories and device to an Apple Retail Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or mail it in for service. Follow this link to Get Support and to explore your options.

Take care.
