My phone keeps disconnecting from the house wifi

When does it disconnect? The phone disables Wi-Fi 30 seconds after the screen locks unless it is plugged in. It does this to preserve battery life, because Wi-Fi, when connected, uses power continuously. If the phone receives a notification while asleep Wi-Fi turns on to process the notification, then turns off again.
