macOS Big Sur 11.5.1 - Startup Chime not working

Hey folks, not the biggest priority here but after updating to Big Sur 11.5.1 I noticed that the Startup Chime isn't working. I've tried the following fixes:

  • System Preferences--Sound--Unchecked box for "Play sound on startup"--restart--Checked box for "Play sound on startup"--restart--no change.
  • Terminal--entered "sudo nvram StartupMute=%00"--restart--no change.
  • Terminal--entered "sudo nvram BootAudio=%0"--restart--no change.
  • Reset SMC--no change.
  • Reset PRAM--no change.

The only thing I haven't tried is an OS reinstall from Recovery Mode.. any ideas out there besides this? System specs below:

2020 27in iMac 5K

3.8 Ghz 8-Core i7

128 GB RAM

Radeon Pro 5700XT 16GB

1TB SSD

iMac 27″, macOS 11.5

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and check again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

1- Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.

2 - Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Un-installers, etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation. The Built-in Security of Big Sur is all that is required.

3 - does this present when attempting to boot into Safe Mode - shift - immediately at restart ??

My suggestion would be to get the obvious stuff out of the way first: go to System Prefs--Sound--Sound Effects--Make sure "Play Sound Effects Through:" has your built-in speakers selected ("iMac Speakers" or equivalent), then click the "Output" tab and make sure the same device is selected there and the volume on both is turned all the way up. The only time the chime seems not to work for me now is when a different sound device is selected on reboot.

Ok, darn. Question: did you upgrade install to Big Sur? This may or may not be related, but I was having general bugginess from my upgrade install to Big Sur from Catalina a few months back.. doing a clean install via a USB stick seemed to clear some issues up. Of course, I would advise to do a Time Machine backup to an external disk before going down that road.
