Replacing the battery in my iPhone 7

I recently bought a second-hand iPhone 7 with 85% battery. I didn't think I'd have to replace the battery but the phone gives very erratic readings as to how much power is left before I have to charge up, and I seem to have to recharge frequently.

If it weren't for the pandemic I'd take the phone to the nearest Apple Store, which is twenty miles away. Should I buy a new battery online and take it and my phone to the computer repair shop round the corner, or would the repairperson need very specialised skills?

I see batteries for the iPhone 7 on Amazon. Most seem to be 2300 mAh capacity but some have less and some have more capacity. I'm tempted to buy the highest capacity battery. Is there any reason why I shouldn't? Are there any brands to avoid?

I'd be very grateful if anyone has the time to answer this. I'm sure there are pitfalls I ought to watch out for but I don't know what they are.

Thanks very much for your helpful answer, lobsterghost1. I had a strong gut feeling there was going to be a snag in my plan! I did notice there were no iPhone replacement batteries manufactured by Apple itself for sale on Amazon. That should have alerted me.

Unfortunately however responsible the staff at my local Apple Store are about health precautions it can't go there because to get there I'd have to make a journey of nearly two hours in a coach full of people. I'm in my 70s, and though I've been fully vaccinated and though all Covid-related restrictions are about to be lifted here in Scotland, I admit I'm too afraid of Covid-19 to go out and about the way I used to..

I have two options: I could continue to make a lot of use of the iWalk portable charger I've bought. It's a relief to use the phone with it attached because otherwise I get such erratic messages from the phone about how much battery I have left that I don't know where I am. The alternative is to find out if I can send my phone by post to the Apple repair service. I'm going to find out all I can about the latter. Thank you again for your advice.

Thank you, Luke. I'm about to post my phone to Apple to have a new battery put in. I do hope that the previous owner hasn't had an unauthorised person do things to the phone. I suppose that's something people buying second-hand are taking a chance on.

Right now I'm wishing I'd splurged out on a brand-new iPhone that didn't need a new battery or anything else done to it, but I didn't know how hard I'd find it to use an iPhone and I thought a brand new one would be a waste of money if I didn't like it so hardly used it. I bought the phone through Amazon; it seems Amazon buys old phones, has them checked, then sells them on with a year's Amazon guarantee, but I don't suppose the check goes beyond making sure the phones are in working order. I'll just have to hope that all goes well and Apple put a new battery in.

NOOOOO. Do not buy a battery online. Apple does not sell parts, so any battery you purchase will NOT be an authentic Apple battery and if you have some ifixit place open your phone, you will forfeit your rights to Apple service on the phone in the future. Also without an authentic Apple battery, the Battery Health system will no longer function on your phone.

Apple Stores are some the safest places you can visit these days. Make an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar for a battery replacement. You don't have to really enter the store if you don't want to go inside. When you arrive, they have people with iPads to check you in. Let them know you aren't comfortable being around people and they'll take care of you.

Don't let anyone other than Apple or a truly Apple Authorized Service Provider service your phone.

I'm glad to have helped you Judith. I've always wanted to visit Scotland. It looks so beautiful!

Here in the US, Apple does permit us to send in our devices for repair. But I don't know if that is the case in Scotland. I would contact Apple there and ask them. Another option for you might be if you know anyone who may be heading near the Apple Store, you could have them get the battery replaced in store on your behalf.

Good luck either way.
