OS X can not view GIF

Continuing the question as I've saw several people ask this and no one gave a answer. some say use quicklook, sometimes that don't work.


This is the answer and You should have known about it already.

open "get Info" From what ever file you want, select "Open With" and select Quicktime player(It should be 7.6.6) But I don't know if it's available anymore from apple as there have been no UPDATES in a Decade. Quicktime should work up to 10.15. Once you change the how it opens into quicktime, finder previews should work. and Gifs should open in the quicktime player to view.


There has been no Word on what REPLACES Quicktime on the MAC, nor what other application or resources pickups after it. Pitiful. Guess media compatibility or resources to understand it is not important to Apple anymore.

Quicktime is still alive and kicking in Big Sur.


The bigger problem is the codecs that work under Quicktime. Many older videos use an Indeo Codec that hasn't been supported since the 1990s. And there are videos created strictly for the Microsoft Windows platform. Unfortunately for those, running Windows on your Mac is necessary, since Flip4mac stopped updating their software.


As for animated GIFs, they should all run. Now Mac OS X Mail does not support animated GIF playback and some web browsers need to enable animated GIFs through their preferences. If you have a GIF that isn't it is likely there is either a Java requirement on top of the GIF, or an ActiveX requirement. And some websites still have Flash, even though Adobe ended support for Flash last year. So chances are you have an intermediate problem creating an issue. It is neither Quicktime, nor HTML5 based which renders animation fine. By the way, your post is regarding Mac OS 10.15, and you posted in the 10.11 forum. So we don't know what you are having trouble with.
