apple tv not working despite following above instructions
apple tv suddently not working; battery replaced, removed and re-inserted HDMI, TV and cable working fine otherwise.

What is your model remote? Identify your Apple TV remote - Apple Support
If the pairing/linking was lost, then you have to pair/link again as described in: If your Apple TV remote isn't working - Apple Support. For the older Apple Remote (aluminum) with older model Apple TV, do both steps; the unlinking and the linking again.
