@gveerusa, from the MacBook Pro ( 10.9.5 ) you are starting from,
I would recommand you to avoid too large a jump and a good compromise I choosed after testing all the recents versions
of MacOS on a MacBook Pro ( Retina, Mid 2015 ), is High Sierra: https://apps.apple.com/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?mt=12 ( 10.13 ).
From many users reports, there are many problems with Big Sur.
I would advise you to strictly follow the 2 first recommandations of @Niel:
And if you have this possibility, I suggest you to test the new version on an external disk so as to be able to roll back
in a few seconds ( by rebooting on your internal disk ).
This is the way I test all new versions without breaking my working environment.
Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which Mac model you have, click on El Capitan, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur.

@Kingsafari: 10.5.8 is 4 versions older than 10.9.5.
We can't say you have the same problem here than @gveerusa.
I guess you might also have a much older Mac.
Thus I suggest you to ask your own question while providing the Mac version you have and its disk and memory capacity.
Hi Niel,
Thank you for your response, I have MacBook Pro, Retina, later 2013. Which one I should go for now?
Mojave if you need 32-bit applications, and Big Sur otherwise.

how can i tell
and how do i get to it
Thank you but this will not work for me it says I have os x 10.9.5 and this application requires 10.10 or later. How can i fix that thanks you for all your help
Choose About This Mac from the Apple menu, click on System Report, Applications, and the 64-bit column. If that doesn't show up on your version, click on El Capitan above.
