Only “restore” option available on itunes

Hi

I had an iphone backup on a an imac for my previous iphone 7.

I got the data transferred from old to new iphone via Bluetooth. Now I’m trying to back up my current iphone 11 backed up onto imac but imac is only giving “restore” option and no other option like sync or backup available.

if i restore then I think it will go back to the last back up from over a year ago - is it so ?

I’m not sure how to go about this and would appreciate any help.

Are you perhaps seeing the options "Set up as new device" or "Restore from backup"? Choose set up as new device, this will allow the computer to connect to the device and back it up, it won't instantaneously change what is current stored on it. This wording has caught many out.

Thank you.

Actually my problem is different.

1- I had an old iPhone (with all it's data) backed up on an iMac. It was iPhone 7.

2- I purchased an iPhone 11 and, for some reason, transferred data from old iPhone 7 to new iPhone 11 via bluetooth (and not the iMac, probably that was not working or allowing me to transfer iPhone 7 data to new iPhone 11- can't remember exactly why - sorry).

3- Now my iPhone 11 has a lot of new content - and I want to back it up on the iMac.

4- When I connect it to iMac it only gives me restore option and not backup.

5- I fear that if I restore then my new iPhone 11 will lose all the new content and go back to 12 months ago when I last backed up my iPhone 7 to the iMac.

Needless to say, I only have 5 GB of iTunes so that is not an option for the 50 GB of content I now have.

Question is how can I create a new backup on iMac which overrides the previous ?

Hope this is a bit more clear.

thanks

Hey there,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! We understand you're connecting your new iPhone 11 to your Mac for the first time, and you're seeing it asking to restore your device. We can help.

The first time your new iPhone is introduced to your Mac once connected, it is expected to see a welcome-type page appear and it may ask you to set up as new or restore. You'll want to choose restore to maintain the current state of your new iPhone. If you were to choose the set up as new option, that is what would erase the device to set it up as new.

We hope this helps. Feel free to reply back to this post if you need more guidance.
