How can I get my macbook pro to appear on my apple monitor with all my icons and desktop files in the right positions and mirror my mac book pro?

I was able to connect it with a lightening plug and am seeing my email, etc and my tool bars but cannot get my desktop file icons to line up as they are on my macbook pro. Currently, they are to the far left of my monitor screen and I cannot see them to even drag them.
Go to Settings > Displays and arrange the monitor as you wish. You can also select mirror displays for an exact mirror.
