Reportedly planned for Monterey and iOS and iPadOS 15.

One difference with existing scanning efforts is that those were implemented server-side, once the data was transferred to another party’s servers and to a different storage location.

The Apple (and reportedly now postponed) content-scanning is implemented client-side.

For another recent example of client-side content scanning and its considerations, see the recently-widely-publicized Lithuanian National Cyber Security Centre security audit and threat assessment of the content-scanning implementations and practices of some smartphone manufacturers.
