Lost iPhone

I removed a lost iPhone from my devices list. But now I'm concerned the data may still be on the phone and it unknown hands....should I have remotely wiped the phone clean before removing from my devices list?

If so - is there a way to put it back on my devices list?

You can't set up Find My unless you have the device itself. Set up Find My on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac - Apple Support

Erase a device in Find My iPhone on iCloud.com - https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/erase-your-device-mmfc0ef36f/icloud - "If your iOS device, Apple Watch, or Mac is lost or stolen, you can erase it if you set up Find My iPhone on the device before it was lost."
