How to delete multiple items in Safari history?

The Safari history can only be deleted one item at one time. No matter I hold "control" or "command" or "Shift", there is no multiple delete function.

Safari only provides the following granularity in history removal from the application menu which is intended to be manual in nature:



and by configuring Safari Preferences > General to automatically remove History items on a schedule unless Manually is selected:
