How do I categorize and file photos so I can delete off photos app to save storage space?

I thought I could categorize and save files (of photographs) to the iCloud Drive and delete off the photos app but that doesn't work. Then I thought I could move the files (of categorized and edited photos) to documents but those are stored in the cloud too. What can I do/file these photographs so I can access them later and delete from photos application on my MacBook Pro?

iCloud Photos is a syncing service. Any photo you delete from a device where iCloud Photos is turned on will also be deleted from iCloud and from any other device connected to iCloud Photos. You can potentially reduce the storage space required on a device by turning on Optimize Storage. See: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204264

Apple does not currently offer cloud-only storage for photos. If that is what you want or need, you may want to explore 3rd party options such as Google Photos or Dropbox.

You should consider getting an external SSD drive to act as long term storage of files, both image and other important files. It could also be used as a clone of your boot drive if it's big enough to be partitioned for that use. OWC (MacSales.com) has a number of them that would be very good candidates.

If all you want is long term storage a rotational drive with it's own power supply would suffice. If you opted for a clone to run from on occasion than a bus powered SSD model would be best.
