Iphone Transfer Trouble

Trying to help my wife with her new iPhone. We tried the iPhone transfer by laying them next to each other. Now, the old phone says 2 minutes left and it is stuck. Been like that for a couple of hours. Unfortunatly we forgot to backup the device to itunes before starting. What happens if we cancel it? Are something going to happen with the old device, or will it be just like before the transfer.
