Slow start

For the past two days my Mac has slowed drastically and sometimes have to switch off and restart. Can you help me solve this please?

Thing that sticks out the most is Kaspersky, macs do not need anti- virus security apps.

Get instructions on how to delete this from the developer.

There are no viruses that attack the mac, so AV apps are useless and can be the source of

a poorly performing mac.

Do not install any apps that promise to optimise, clean or speed up your mac, they

interfere with the macs own housekeeping.

A 5400RPM HDD is by default a very slow drive and Big Sur and the APFS file system

are really optimised for SSDs.

Even so your drive is incredibly slow, download and run this app https://binaryfruit.com/drivedx

there is a free trial period. This will give an indication of your drives health and whether it

is close to failing.

Totally agree regarding the AntiVirus Software as totally not needed and integers with the operation of the computer for a protects against something that does not exist on macOS - Viruses.

Also agree on the slow 5400 RPM Internal Drive as major bottleneck for performance. Alternative for performance is a good and reliable External SSD to run the OS off of that drive. Relatively inexpensive and easy solution. Just be sure to shop around ( if going this route ) for Reliable SSD.

Something else pops up - WdDeviceType00.kext - com.wdc.driver.WdDeviceType00 (1.1) - the macOS is very capable to manage external drives without, the often times, very buggy Third Party Software from Western Digital software.

Like mentioned for AV Software Removal - suggest getting the Developers Instruction to remove this software and let Big Sur manage the drive.

In order to have better understanding of the situation and condition of the computer and software running >>>

Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a Trusted Developer and well Respected ASC Contributor. The application is free or paid from added features. Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ). It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software. The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information. Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.

Thank you for introducing me to EtreCheck who have informed me of a slow hard drive and that time machine backup is also not functional. I will work through their suggested solutions. Presently my machine has sped up again without action on my part, however I will still proceed with sorting things out.

I may have to buy a new hard drive and review software.

Thank you again.
