Unexplainable display crack / screen stopped working

I work from home. I have a 2019, 16-inch Macbook Pro, purchased brand new last year. My laptop stays on my desk, it never leaves, it has never been dropped, it has a protective cover for both the body and the screen. This morning I went to open my laptop to start my day and the screen is black with a very very small "hairline fracture" coming out from the border. The MacBook screen will not display anything, but I can still connect to my external monitors. I have no idea what would have caused this other than "shutting the lid". I've seen lots of other posts about the new MacBook Pro displays "cracking" without explanation, especially lots of people who simply closed their laptop lid.

Has anyone had any success in getting answers as to why this happens? or what can be done about it besides paying $$$$$ to get it repaired?

Thank you!

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 11.4

That camera cover may be the cause of the cracked glass since these laptops have very little clearance when the lid is closed. All it would take is a bit of extra pressure on the closed lid to cause the crack. The crack is right next to the camera cover too.

I have seen a much thinner camera cover used on these USB-C Apple laptops, but of course the camera cover is much flimsier due to being so thin and the camera cover tends to deform and is also a bit harder to slide. You don't want the camera cover to touch the Trackpad/Palmrest at all when the lid is closed. A Post-It Note cut to size can be an option as well.
