I recently upgraded my old Apple TV to the 4K version. I am about to purchase a 4ktv. However on video format options there is no 4K option? 1080 had and set to Ed are the only options shown.
is there an explanation or is there not actually any 4K? Anyone know?

The Apple TV settings try to prevent showing incompatible options. You will need to connect a 4K screen to see the 4K format option in Settings.
Also if you do have a 4K TV with Dolby Vision then you need to make sure you have a high speed HDMI cable. It will say “high speed with Ethernet” on the cord.
In addition, you need to view 4K content on the 4K TV.
There is lots of 4K content on Apple TV if you look around
my TV is 4K HDR and Apple TV can show that with suitable content
