No "Import From" option under File menu in Safari

Hello,

I'm currently running macOS Big Sur v11.5.2 on a 2020 M1 Mac mini. I am running Safari v14.1.2 and I also have Firefox v.91.0 and Google Chrome v92.0.4515.131ARM for M1 chip installed.

I have passwords in Firefox that I want to import into Safari but I cannot find the "Import From" option under the File menu. I have the "Import Bookmarks..." option but this only prompts me to select a bookmarks HTML file to import from Finder, not bookmarks, passwords, etc. from another browser. I've attached a screenshot of my File menu in Safari:

Apparently this is a previous issue as well which was posted about here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251670364

by a user running Safari 13.1.2 on MacOS 10.15.6, but no resolution seemed to come from it. I have tried booting my Mac into Safe Mode as suggested in the previous topic but the issue persisted. I have also checked the other tabs in Safari (Edit, View, History, etc...) and Safari Preferences but it doesn't seem like the "Import From" option exists anywhere.

Apple support lists the "Import From" option as the only way to import passwords from another browser to Safari, at least from what I can find here:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/safari/ibrw1015/mac

so I don't see any other way currently suggested by Apple.

I've contacted Apple Support and had a long chat session where they were unable to diagnose the issue.

Am I missing something or overlooking an option somewhere to enable the "Import From" option in the File menu? Having both Firefox and Chrome installed doesn't seem to prompt it to appear. Not sure what else I can troubleshoot further.

Thanks all. Please let me know if any further information needs to be provided.

Replying to say that I've resolved this though I'm not entirely sure how. However I made the following changes:

  • Safari was set as my default browser so I switched this to Firefox under System Preferences > General > Default web browser.
  • I force quit both Safari and Firefox to ensure they were completely closed.
  • I re-opened Safari and somehow my "Import From" option was again available.
  • To ensure the option would remain I closed Safari and changed it back to my default browser through System Preferences again.
  • I re-opened Safari and was still able to import password using the "Import From" option.

I am not sure what re-enabled this feature but at this point I would certainly call this a "bug" to be looked at by Apple. Hopefully these steps will help others that come across this issue.
