Minecraft Ip address problem

Hi, so I was trying to connect to my friend's Minecraft world but it went to an IP address, once I had done the IP address it said: "cannot connect to server". So I looked on Google but couldn't find the right answer could I please have some help- I'm also using Minecraft Education Edition if that helps. Thanks.

Hi _nrpb,

I'm not sure whether Education Edition and normal Java Edition are cross-compatible with each other. Assuming they are, try these tips:

  • Ensure that your friend gave you their external IP address, not their internal IP address. To get the external address, have your friend search "what's my ip".

Internal IP addresses look like 10.xxx.xxx.xxx, 172.(16-31).xxx.xxx, or 192.168.xxx.xxx. They are not reachable from the outside world, and require port-forwarding access.

  • You might have to explicitly specify the server port. By default, this port is 25565.

To specify the port, the IP address would look like this, where yyyyy is the port number: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:yyyyy
