Unwittingly I must put my iwatch into some mode where the screen goes blank and if I tap the screen it shows the date and time. How does this happen and why. I'm not aware of doing anything and can't find how to get back to normal.
Perhaps your watch is in Power Reserve Mode. See the 'Use Power Reserve' section in:

Thanks everyone I went through all the settings and somehow (must be the watch gremlin) do not disterb was switched on - dohh

To turn off power reserve mode,press and hold the side button for about 10 seconds, until you see the watch restart and the Apple logo appear.
Keep in mind that if your battery is almost completely empty, you might need to charge the watch before it will restart normally.
