how to reset a password using command prompt ?

Is there a way to reset a password using command prompt for 20iMac 2008, model A1224 (OSX probably Snow Leopard)? Perhaps erasing the old password thus forcing the computer to offer a prompt for a replacement. (all regularly recommended simple ways to reset the password - failed)
