iphone 6s plus proximity sensor

During phone calls, my display will turn on when I hold it up to my ear (or cover the proximity sensor). When I remove it from my ear (or uncover the proximity sensor) the disply turns off. When I re-cover the sensor, the display will turn on.

It appears to be working in reverse of what it's supposed to do. The phone's software is up to date with IOS 14.7.1.

Could this be an issue with the new software update?

It's not in a case. But if it was, wouldn't the partial blockage of the sensor by a case make the display turn off? My phone display turns on when the proximity sensor is covered and the display it turns off when it is uncovered.

I did replaced the LCD display and screen, but I used the proximity sensor, earpiece, camera, and home button from the original phone. I also happened to update the software at the same time.

Other then the proximity sensor issue, everything else works as it should.

How might you believe you can remove and re-install the proximity sensor? It isn't a part you can get to unless you remove the screen from your phone, which you most definitely SHOULD NOT attempt to do.

Try a Forced Restart on your phone. You suggest this happened after an iOS update. Sometimes something as simple as a Forced Restart cures odd niggles after an update.

Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If that doesn't help, have your phone evaluated at the Apple Store Genius Bar. DO NOT try to take the screen off your phone.

Scratch everything I suggested here. I completely missed you replaced the screen on your phone yourself. You clearly messed up the phone. I hope you can fix it. Apple won't help you, so if you can't get it working correctly, perhaps one of those iFixit type places, like most malls have may be able to help you.

Well, it turned out to be the proximity sensor / ambient light / forward camera assembly.

On a side note, the iPhone 6s plus was given to me by my sister after she upgraded to an iPhone 12. The phone was alomst 6 years old and was out of warranty years ago. It had a badly shattered screen and the original battery that was bad. I later discovered the issue with the proximity sensor, and also discovered a non functioning accelerometer ic and gyroscope ic. She told me it had been dropped several times from table height as evidenced by the scratches on all four corners of the case and the phone was giving her problems for some time. I estimate the phone was worth less then $20 in the condition she gave it to me.

The only reason I opened it up was to see if I could repair it. I was able to get it working for under $40 (display screen, battery, and proximity sensor assembly). I was even able to tighten (and thread lock) the screws holding the taptic engine, which resolved the rattling noise when the phone was in vibrate mode. The only thing I did not repair was the accelerometer ic and gyroscope ic because I do not have the right equipment and I have no experienc soldiering circuit boards. The cost to have someone replace the ic chips would have cost far more then buying a certified refurbished iPhone 6s plus.

I inserted the sim card of another phone and it worked flawlessly, with the exception of applications requiring the gyroscope or accelerometer.

I agree with you all and had this been a newer model iPhone or under warranty, then the best course of action would be to get it repaired through authorized Apple repair facility. However, in my case, this iPhone would have ended up in the trash had my sister given it to me to tinker around with.

My 11 year old wants the iPhone I repaired. I am considering going with a $15 a month prepaid plan and giving it to him. I'll use it as a test to see if he is responsible enough to take care of a phone. If he shows me he is, then in a couple of years I'll buy him a brand new and better phone.

I'm going to remove and re-install the sensor. Maybe something isn't lining up.
