If you are already running 10.6.8, go to Apple menu -> About This Mac

If it says Intel CoreDuo or Intel CoreSolo, that's as high as you can go with that machine on the processor.

If it says Intel Core2Duo, Core i3, i5, i7, or Xeon, you may be able to upgrade to 10.7.5, 10.11.6, or 10.13 or 10.14.

Look at the requirements on each link to determine where you want to go.
