How long does it take to transfer my data to my new iPhone

My fiancé’s new iPhone arrived and he asked me to set it up for him, but so far, it’s taken over two hours for the data to transfer… He has only used 34GB of the 64GB on his old phone, and his new iPhone is 128GB, so it just seems a bit strange that it’s taking so long. He doesn’t have an Apple Watch or any other Apple devices that the phone is paired with. Any ideas?

The other odd thing, was that the phone had automatically chosen Germany as the country, but we’re in the UK - I’ve not seen this happen in all my years of owning iPhones.

If you are updating iOS to 14.7.1 you must complete that first, but it’s only necessary if his current phone is on that version; you would get a warning if it is. You should do the update using your computer, not over the air. See this article→Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Normally a quick start update takes about 5 minutes to transfer data and settings from a previous phone, then it download apps and music from the app store, and finally syncs data from iCloud.

I believe the phones are just transferring from the old one to the new one over our wifi as I had to use the new phone to scan the screen of the old phone. As for where it was purchased, it was directly from EE, as a contract upgrade. Brand new handset, not refurbished or purchased second hand.

It’s the software update to iOS 14.7.1 that it has been stuck on for three hours, I don’t believe it has even begun to transfer his data over yet.
