Reset password 26 day waiting period.

I received an used iPad from a friend. The colours on mine had all gone haywire and the volume down button was broken. She hadn’t used hers in years. There was a passcode lock but the passcode was not known . After trying different combinations the phone would show “iPad is disabled please wait 5 minutes”. I found information on how to restore a disabled iPad through iTunes. Found out the screen needs to say “iPad disabled please connect to iTunes” not “ iPad disabled , please wait ( goes 5, then 10, then 15 up to a hour) minutes” iTunes will not recognize the iPad until after 10 tries. Finally got iTunes to restore to factory settings. Set up language and then country and then it starts with activation code. Now I needed her Apple ID and password. Knew her ID but not password so I chose unknown id or password. It then asks for the phone number associated with her id. It was a number she could not remember but she managed to find it in an old resume of hers. I enter the number and then it says it will send a code to the phone . I clicked on the link “did not receive code” and then give choice , one being phone not in use . It gives me a choice for new contact number . It then sends a verification to the phone which I did. It then sends a verification code for the email address which I did. It then shows a message that a text will be sent to the new phone with instructions for new password within the next 24 hours. If I want to check on the status to go to I forgot.Apple.com . I hadn’t heard anything for 2 days so I started a chat with Apple support. I was told to check my status which I did and it said to wait “ 26 DAYS” . After all I did ? There is absolutely no private information left on this iPad as I had restored in in iTunes. Why the 26 days?

Your phone isn’t considered trusted with the Apple ID you started your account recovery for. Yes you did figure out the phone number used however you’re asking the code to go to a brand new phone number never used with the Apple ID. Trusted means it’s been used with an verified for that specific Apple ID. If you guys had not factory reset the iPad and started the account recovery process directly from the iPad using the Apple ID the wait period probably would’ve been a lot shorter because it was being done on a trusted device.

That’s probably why it’s 26 days because the device was restore to factory settings and now in Activation Locked. The whole point of activation lock is to prevent someone not the owner from using it. Also since she doesn’t have the original phone number they’re giving it more time for the Apple ID owner to start the account recovery process if they weren’t the ones to start it.

if she were to still have the original phone number or have started account recovery from a still trusted device it would probably a much be shorter wait period.

You are asking why it will take 26 days and asking questions about the entire process so I, as another customer like yourself, am just explaining and answering your questions on why it is likely taking so long in your instance.

Articles and support steps that you usually follow before starting account recovery and the information about two factor authentication does talk about trusted devices and phone numbers.

There are also a lot of factors that go into the process, but in the end it is an automated process and only Apple knows the deeper details.

Account recovery is an automated process that is also a two phase process once started. Phase 1 is the evaluation period, usually 24-48 hours but can be longer or shorter. This phase says Apple is evaluating your info and you’ll get an update after the posted time is over (people mistakenly think it means they’ll be able to reset the password immediately after this first phase.)

Once phase 1 is done it enters phase 2 where https://iforgot.apple.com/ will give you the final amount of days (can be weeks) you’ll wait. On that final day you’ll get a text, follow that text/email immediately.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

If you want to, you can send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner. Pick the closest topic you can find.

Which brings me around to the fact we did find the original phone number, went through the process of registering a new working number, verified the new number and still have to wait (25 days now) 26 days. Original owner has been by my side through this whole process which has only strengthened her dislike for Apple products. The account recovery was started through my trusted iPhone. I kept telling her it was for security purposes to protect her information.( that is no longer on the iPad) but still hard to understand the 26 days.

We went through the process of restoring a disabled iPad with unknown passcode. From Apple support “If you enter the wrong passcode too many times, you'll see a message that your iPad is disabled. If you can't remember your passcode, you need to erase your iPad, which deletes your data and settings, including the passcode. If you backed up your iPad, you can restore your data and settings after restoring your iPad.Jul. 15, 2020” Now you are saying we should have started the password recovery process before we restored the iPad?

Plus we followed directions from Apple Support.

“ If you can't access any of your devices

You can reset your Apple ID password on a friend or family member's iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using the Apple Support app or the Find My iPhone app.

Use the Apple Support app

To reset your password using the Apple Support app on a friend or family member's iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 12 or later, the device owner will need to download the Apple Support app.

Ask the device owner to open the App Store on their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, then search for Apple Support and download the app. Then open the Apple Support app and follow these steps:

Under Topics, tap Passwords & Security.

Tap Reset Apple ID password.

Tap Get Started, then tap "A different Apple ID."

Enter the Apple ID that you need to reset the password for.

Tap Next, then follow the steps on your screen until you receive confirmation that your Apple ID password is changed. “

So this information is wrong?
