Why is my mac prompting me for my iPhone passcode when logging in to Apple ID?

I don't recall ever seeing something like this before 11.5. I am logging into my Apple ID on my Mac. Yet a dialog appears from Apple ID "Etner the passcode you use to unlock the iPhone "<redacted>". It goes on to say "This passcode protects your Apple ID, saved password and other data stored in iCloud. Your passcode is encrypted and cannot be read by Apple. "

Since when, or under what configuration, is my iPhone unlock code used instead of my Apple ID password? What if I don't have an iPhone (ever or recently discarded)?

Is the security prompt legitimate or malware? (apple, ikr)

Hi there JohnTheSavage!

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities. It sounds like your Mac is requesting your iPhone's passcode as a security feature apart of iCloud. We'll be glad to give you some information.

When you are syncing multiple devices with your iCloud information to make sure that your information stays secure, you will be prompted for the password or passcode of the trusted devices that Is synced with your iCloud information to ensure that your data remains secure.

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
