How do I stop Shared Album Photos from saving in my photo library?

I am a member of a number of shared albums (which I love) but photos from those shared albums are being saved in my photo library. How do I stop that from happening (note: it only happens on my MacBook, not on my iPhone)?

The only thing I could find was to uncheck the Shared Albums box in Preferences, but that removed all of the albums, and I want to see them - I just don't want other people's photos in my library.

Shared album photos do not automatically import. You can import pictures by right-clicking/two-finger clicking on an image in a shared album to which you are a member. If you do not import, they simply remain in the shared album, not in your library.

I don't want them to import, but they are. How do I turn that off?

They do not save in your library unless you import the pictures. They just remain in the shared album.

There is no such setting. You have to manually import. Select a shared album. Select any image in that album that has been shared with you (under albums > shared album). Right-click on an image. Your options should be Get Info, Import, or Delete from Shared Album. They will not appear in your imports, and therefore your library, unless you elect to import.
