System very slow than expected

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

How is Storage Capacity:

If your storage capacity is almost fully then up, then note that it will overheat, leading to this slow speed.

Remove Login Items:

See if there are login items. If so, rid of them, as it may be making your Mac log slower. Go Here: Remove Login Items to Resolve Startup Problems on your Mac - Apple Support. Perform this in Safe Mode, as Login Items do not load at login.
