Why do emails disappear from iPhone 11 even after adding and deleting email accounts?

Why do emails disappear on my new iPhone 11? Deleting and re-adding accounts doesn't help. Previously had a Samsung phone and this didn't happen. My laptop and desktop computers are Macs; all the emails show up on those. Can't follow discussions about conflicts between IMAP and POP protocols. Help! Was 20 minutes late to a graduate school orientation because the email with the meeting room number had disappeared.

iPhone 11, iOS 14

Have you noticed any pattern to the messages that are evaporating? Is it any specific email provider, or all?

One thing to check in Settings > Mail > Accounts, some providers have a setting for "mail days to sync." You'll want to set that to no limit if available.

If it's gmail, check your "all mail" folder and see if anything is there.
