tracking exercise on my watch 6

Do I need to have my phone with me to track workouts? I tracks move and stand but not workouts?

I didn't think so bc it has GPS. It just does not track with the green ring. I know how to use the app but it just stopped working. I tried turning it off and then on, no go. It doesn't track it on my phone either.
