Spectrum Community Wifi

I copied and pasted this question I found because it is well worded and because I am having the exact same issues. I just want to be able to use my HomePod minis as speakers for my TV. All three sets! Please Apple?

Q:

HomeKit and Apple Connectivity Issues with Spectrum Community WiFi

I have lived in a Spectrum Community WiFi apartment building for going on seven months and this problem has never gotten better.

Spectrum Community WiFi is a "solution" that Spectrum has built out for businesses and apartment/condo complexes etc and it is an absolute nightmare. There is no modem/router that you can manipulate (you can't even bring your own modem/router to use). Instead they use an "access point" that each unit in the building has, and the entire building effectively shares the same SSID and password. You have to log in to an online portal to add the MAC addresses of all of the nodes you want to provide wireless internet to. The portal is secure in the sense that no one can see my devices MAC addresses and I can't see anyone else's.

I am able to gain access to the internet through this method, but there are a multitude of issues that occur when trying to use Apple products on the network (specifically when those devices try to speak to each other).

I've worked with Spectrum Community WiFi on these issues since I moved in and I have no recourse, and ultimately they mentioned that when the WiFi "solution" was designed, it wasn't built for tens of devices to be talking to each other all the time...

The biggest issue is that some of my devices are closer to my neighbor's Access Point and not the one that is in my unit, and other devices are closer to my own Access Point. This means Apple devices aren't considering them on the same "network" regardless of the fact that both devices are on a network with the same SSID and password. When you translate this into the real world, it means that I can't use my stereo speaker pair with my Apple TV; I have to use the ROKU TV speakers, which are awful in comparison.

The second issue is that devices continuously stop responding when I open the Home app. That's because they've decided to join another Access Point. Sometimes, when I rip the ethernet cable out of the Access Point in my closet, they rejoin for a couple of hours before falling off again.

Another issue that I've had in the past and am having again is after I reset my HomePod mini, I can't add it back to my Home app because it is saying I am using "Incompatible WiFi." This could be for a plethora of reasons, but I think it's because I started using a "Private Address" on my phone's WiFi. When I was talking to Spectrum Community WiFi support about many of the issues I was having, they told me to switch the network on my phone to stop using "Private Address" in the wifi settings on my iPhone.

I was doing this and things were working a little better, and it helped my devices communicate more to each other than they are now, but it also meant my devices were on an open, less-secure network, which I don't want to be doing.

Lots of info here, and I'm not sure I'm looking for an answer because I don't really think one exists. If you are potentially moving into a Spectrum Community WiFi, run for the hills.

Hi Stiggins,

It appears you want to use your three HomePod mini devices as speakers for your Apple TV 4K. If you're wanting to set up home theater audio, then you would need a HomePod, as HomePod mini devices (or AirPlay 2-compatible speakers) aren't supported for home theater audio. You can read more about that here: Set up home theater audio with HomePod and Apple TV 4K

If you're encounter any other issues with your HomePod mini devices, you can restart your devices and also ensure those are updated to see if that might help:

Best wishes.
