prohibitory symbol on start up with my iMac.

I’m getting a prohibitory symbol on start up with my iMac 27 inch. I’ve tried resetting the ram and P ram on start up with no success. What can I try next?

iMac prohibitory symbol When I tried to start my iMac this morning it first showed the Apple icon and a task bar loading at about 90%. After about 10 seconds I got the prohibitory symbol. I have shut down and re-started a couple of times, trying to reach the Disk Utility, as well as holding the option key to reach the start up disk. Nothing works and it keeps going back to the prohibitory symbol. I have been on hold with support for forty minutes. Any ideas?

Help! Cannot Reboot iMac A message popped up on my iMac (running Catalina) indicating that updates that were installed during the night required that the computer be restarted. While going through the start-up sequence, the screen displayed a "small circle with a slash through it". After waiting about 40 minutes with the symbol still remaining, I shut down the computer using the power button. When I restarted, again, the computer went through the normal start-up sequence. After a couple of minutes, the same symbol was displayed. I never experienced anything like this before. Could someone please help? Thank you so much.
